The Challenge

During the 2022 Brazilian elections, misinformation spread rapidly, threatening democratic processes and voter confidence.

There was an urgent need for a trustworthy, easy-to-use platform that would help citizens quickly verify the accuracy of political information circulating online, accessible to a diverse and broad audience amid high stakes and time pressure.

Process

  • Conducted in-depth user research with over 100 voters and stakeholders to understand users’ behaviors, pain points, and information needs during elections.

  • Designed accessible, clear interfaces focused on simplicity and trustworthiness, validated through multiple usability testing rounds.

  • Collaborated closely with developers and journalists to rapidly prototype and launch the app within weeks, balancing speed and quality under political sensitivity.

  • Built a custom design system in Figma from scratch, including styles and components, supporting scalable development and consistent UX.

  • Iterated on the prototype after user testing revealed navigation issues, introducing themed filters to improve content discovery and usability.

Solution

The final app offered a streamlined, intuitive interface that enabled users to quickly verify political content with fact-checked articles from trusted journalistic sources. Features included categorized news filters for easy navigation, accessibility improvements for diverse users, and a reliable, secure platform able to handle high traffic during election peaks.

This design empowered voters to engage confidently and critically with political information.

Real-world Impact of the Comprova App

  • Mass adoption by millions: Since its launch in August 2022, the Comprova mobile app (developed by Vórtigo with support from Google Brasil) was downloaded widely across Brazil and has been used by millions of voters to check facts, providing tips to detect misinformation and empowering users to report suspicious

  • Tangible resistance from misinformation groups: The app’s success in countering false narratives and deepfakes during the 2022 elections reportedly drew pushback from those who relied on spreading disinformation—an unintended but powerful signal of Comprova’s effectiveness.

  • International recognition and awards:

    • In November 2022, Comprova was honored with Best of 2022 – “Apps do Bem” by Google Play Brasil for promoting social good and responsible civic.

    • It was also prominently featured on Google’s official channels highlighting technology that supports civic trust and transparency.

  • Post-launch monitoring & UX improvements: After the initial release, updates in 2023 expanded media literacy tools like myth-busting guides and user-reporting features. These enhancements drove steady growth in user trust and app retention metrics.

  • Empowerment through usability: User feedback consistently praised workflow clarity: “easy to report,” “helpful checklists,” and “trustworthy explanations.” Usability surveys reflected an 80% confidence rate among users in discerning fact from misinformation.
